How to open .BLEND files (Blender projects) on Android, Windows and Linux

What a .blend file is and how to open Blender BLEND and BLEND1 files for free on Android, Windows and Linux to see the models, even without Blender installed.

A friend sends you their Blender project, a free model you want only comes as .blend, or you find a folder of old projects and want to know what’s in them. Blender is free, but it’s a big program to install for a quick look, and there’s no Blender for phones.

A .blend file is a Blender project. Folders reads the models straight out of the file and shows them in its 3D viewer on Android and Windows, without Blender installed. It opens .blend1 backups the same way.

What is a .BLEND file?

BLEND is the native file of Blender, the free and open-source 3D creation suite. A .blend file is close to a snapshot of what Blender had in memory when you saved: every scene, object, mesh, material, node tree, modifier, animation and render setting, and the textures too if they were packed into the file.

What makes it readable outside Blender is that each file also carries a description of its own data structures, which Blender calls “SDNA”. A reader can use that description to find the meshes in files from many different Blender versions. Files can also be saved compressed: with gzip in older versions, and with Zstandard since Blender 3.0.

Extension What it is
.blend A Blender project file
.blend1 The previous version of that project, kept as a backup when you saved

Blender’s Save Versions setting controls the backups: each save renames the old file to .blend1 (and older ones to .blend2 and onwards, if you ask for more).

How to open a .BLEND file with Folders

  1. Install Folders from the download page and allow it to see your files.
  2. Find the project, or search for .blend.
  3. Tap it. Folders shows Reading Blender file… while it pulls out the meshes, then opens them in the 3D viewer.

A .blend1 opens the same way, handy for checking what the previous save looked like before you restore it.

From another Android app, choose Open with → Folders. On Windows, open the file in Folders, or right-click it and pick Open with → Folders. On Linux, Blender itself is usually one install away; Folders’ 3D view isn’t available there yet, as it needs a web view the Linux version doesn’t have.

What you can do with it in Folders

  • See the models in place. Every mesh object appears where it sits in the scene, with flat or smooth shading and the base colours of its materials.
  • Look around. Drag to turn, pinch or scroll to zoom, double-tap to frame it again, plus Auto-rotate, Wireframe, Ground grid and Axes.
  • Details. Meshes, vertices, triangles, materials and the size in model units (Blender’s units).
  • Save screenshot for a quick preview to send.
  • No meshes? The saved preview. If a file holds only curves, text, cameras or lights, Folders shows the preview picture Blender saved inside it, which Blender version saved the file, and how many objects it couldn’t draw.
  • Very big scenes open with as many meshes as the viewer can take, and Folders tells you that part of the scene was left out.

Because Blender isn’t running, anything Blender calculates on the fly is missing:

  • Modifiers aren’t applied. A model with Subdivision Surface shows its low-poly cage, a Mirror modifier shows one half, an Array shows a single copy, and Geometry Nodes don’t run.
  • Textures and node-based looks aren’t shown, only base colours.
  • Curves, text, particles, hair and instanced collections aren’t drawn, and objects linked from other .blend files live in those other files.
  • Animation doesn’t play.

Other ways to open .BLEND files

  • Blender (free, Windows and Linux). There’s also a portable version that runs without installing, handy for a one-off look.
  • Godot (free game engine) imports .blend files directly, using an installed copy of Blender in the background.
  • An export from Blender. To share a model with people who don’t use Blender, export it as GLB, FBX, OBJ or STL. A GLB keeps its textures and opens fully in Folders.

Problems opening a .BLEND file?

The model looks blocky, or half of it is missing. Those are the unapplied modifiers described above. In Blender, apply them, or export to GLB with Apply Modifiers ticked and open the GLB.

Blender shows pink surfaces. Pink means Blender can’t find the texture images, usually because the project was moved without them. Use File → External Data → Find Missing Files, and before sending a project, Pack Resources so the images travel inside the .blend.

“Couldn’t open this Blender file”. The file is damaged or wasn’t saved completely. Try the .blend1 backup, or in Blender use File → Recover → Auto Save.

Blender won’t open a .blend1 when you double-click it. Make a copy, rename it to end in .blend, and open that.

Questions people ask

Can I open a .blend file without Blender? Yes, to look at the models: Folders reads the meshes from the file itself. To render or edit, you need Blender.

Can I open a .blend file on Android? Yes. There’s no Blender for Android, but Folders shows the models in its 3D viewer.

What is a .blend1 file, and can I delete it? It’s the backup of your previous save. Delete it if you don’t need the older version, or set Save Versions to 0 in Blender’s preferences to stop making them.

How do I convert .blend to OBJ, STL or GLB? In Blender, use File → Export. Folders doesn’t convert models.
