How to open .ODP files (OpenDocument presentations) on Android, Windows and Linux

What an .odp file is and how to open ODP and OTP slides from LibreOffice Impress for free on Android, Windows and Linux: view, present and read speaker notes.

Teachers, open-source projects, universities and public offices often use LibreOffice, so their slides arrive as .odp files. If you only have PowerPoint, or nothing at all on your phone, the file may refuse to open or look broken.

Folders opens .odp presentations and .otp templates in its presentation viewer on Android, Windows and Linux. It’s free and offline: read the slides and speaker notes, and present them full screen.

What is an .odp file?

ODP stands for OpenDocument Presentation. It’s part of the OpenDocument Format (ODF), the open standard maintained by OASIS and published as ISO/IEC 26300, alongside .odt for text and .ods for spreadsheets. It’s the default format of LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress.

An .odp file is a ZIP archive. Inside you’ll find content.xml (the slides and their text), styles.xml (master pages and formatting), meta.xml, a Pictures folder with the images, and a short mimetype file naming the document type. To get the original pictures out, copy the presentation, rename the copy to .zip and open it in Folders: it opens as an archive, where you can tap a picture to view it or select the ones you want and choose Extract selected.

Extension What it is
.odp OpenDocument presentation
.otp OpenDocument presentation template, used to start new decks with the same design

ODP and PowerPoint’s PPTX do the same job and both are ZIPs of XML, but the XML inside is entirely different. Converting between them works well for ordinary slides; custom animations, some shapes and fonts are where differences show.

How to open an .odp file with Folders

On your phone (Android)

  1. Install Folders from the download section and allow it to read your files.
  2. Look in Download or wherever you saved the file, or search for its name.
  3. Tap the .odp. The slides open in the presentation viewer.
  4. For a file in email, a messenger or a cloud app, choose Open with → Folders.

On a computer (Windows or Linux)

  1. Install Folders and browse to the presentation.
  2. Open it in the presentation viewer.
  3. On Windows, File Explorer’s right-click menu also offers Open with → Folders, added by the installer.

What you can do with it in Folders

  • Read the slides in order, as laid out in Impress.
  • Present full screen, moving with next and previous.
  • Speaker notes for each slide, so you can read what the presenter planned to say.
  • Go to slide… for long decks.

OpenDocument presentations are view only in Folders: the slide actions (duplicate, delete, move) and Save are for PowerPoint’s PPTX family. If you need to rearrange an .odp deck, change it in LibreOffice Impress, or save it as .pptx there and then use Folders. An .otp template opens like a presentation when it contains slides. Animations, transitions and editing slide text aren’t part of the viewer.

Other ways to open .odp files

  • LibreOffice Impress, the program that makes them: free on Windows and Linux. On Android, Collabora Office is built on LibreOffice.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint opens and saves ODP, though layouts may shift a little.
  • Google Slides imports .odp files uploaded to Google Drive.

Problems opening an .odp file?

  • It’s protected with a password. LibreOffice encrypts the file when you set a password, so no viewer can read it without that password. Open it in LibreOffice, enter the password and save an unprotected copy.
  • It ends in .sxi. That’s the older OpenOffice.org 1 presentation format from before ODF. Open it in LibreOffice and save it as .odp or .pptx.
  • Text has moved or changed font. Impress decks often use fonts that come with LibreOffice and may not be on your device, so similar fonts stand in.
  • It won’t open. A ZIP that was cut off during download is unreadable. Download it again or ask for a fresh copy.

Questions people ask

Can PowerPoint open ODP files? Yes. PowerPoint opens .odp and can save in that format, though complex animations and some shapes may not come across perfectly.

How do I convert ODP to PPTX? In LibreOffice Impress, choose File → Save As and the PowerPoint 2007-365 (.pptx) type. PowerPoint and Google Slides can also save an imported .odp as .pptx. Folders doesn’t convert presentations, but it can rearrange the slides of the .pptx afterwards.

How do I open an ODP file on Android? Install Folders and tap the file. It opens offline in the presentation viewer, no office app needed.

ODP vs PPTX: what’s the difference? They do the same job. ODP is the open ISO standard used by LibreOffice; PPTX is PowerPoint’s format and the one most people expect when you send slides.
