How to open .WRL files (VRML 3D worlds) on Android, Windows and Linux
What a .wrl file is and how to open VRML 2.0 (VRML97) WRL and VRML models for free on Android, Windows and Linux, plus what to do with old VRML 1.0 files.

A .wrl file usually turns up in one of three places: a 3D model of an electronic part from KiCad, a file meant for full-colour 3D printing, or an archive of 1990s web pages that once showed 3D “worlds” in the browser. No web browser plays them today, and Windows has no viewer for them.
A .wrl file is a VRML scene. Folders opens VRML 2.0 files (also called VRML97) in its built-in 3D viewer on Android and Windows, for free and offline.
What is a .WRL file?
VRML is the Virtual Reality Modeling Language, a text format from the mid-1990s for describing 3D scenes on the web. The extension .wrl is short for “world”. There are two main versions: VRML 1.0, and VRML 2.0, which became the ISO standard known as VRML97. Its successor is X3D.
A VRML file is readable text that begins with a line such as #VRML V2.0 utf8. It describes shapes, colours, textures, lights and viewpoints. VRML 2.0 added interactive parts: sensors that react to clicks, timers, animations and small scripts. A file can also pull in other files with Inline.
| Extension | What it is |
|---|---|
| .wrl | A VRML scene (“world”), the usual extension |
| .vrml | The same format under a longer extension |
VRML outlived its web days because it’s simple and handles colour well. KiCad uses it for its 3D component models and can export whole circuit boards to it, many CAD programs export it, and colour 3D-printing services have long accepted it.
How to open a .WRL file with Folders
- Install Folders from the download page and let it access your files.
- Find the .wrl or .vrml file. Any texture images it uses should be in the same folder.
- Tap it. The model appears in the 3D viewer once it’s processed.
On Android, files in other apps open with Open with → Folders. On Windows, use Folders directly, or right-click the file in File Explorer and pick Open with → Folders. On Linux, the 3D viewer needs a web view that Folders’ Linux version doesn’t have yet; it says so and offers Open with… for another program.
What you can do with it in Folders
- See the shapes and colours. Boxes, cylinders, spheres, faceted surfaces, their colours and their textures are drawn as the file describes them.
- A clean background. A VRML world can paint its own sky and ground. Folders leaves that out so the model stays framed against the viewer’s own background.
- Check a part or a board. Turn a component model around to look at its pins and body, or look over a board export before you send it on.
- Details. Meshes, vertices, triangles, materials and textures, and the size in model units.
- Wireframe, Ground grid, Axes, Z axis is up, Auto-rotate and Save screenshot.
Interactive parts don’t run: sensors, timers, scripts and animations are ignored, and you see the scene as it stands. Files pulled in with Inline aren’t loaded either.
Other ways to open .WRL files
- castle-model-viewer (free, Windows and Linux; formerly view3dscene): reads VRML 1.0, VRML 2.0 and X3D, with much of their interactivity.
- Blender (free): imports VRML 2.0 with the Web3D X3D/VRML2 add-on, useful for converting to other formats.
- Online 3D Viewer (3dviewer.net): opens WRL files in a web browser.
- KiCad: shows its own component models and boards in its 3D viewer.
Problems opening a .WRL file?
“VRML 1.0 files aren’t supported.” Folders reads VRML 2.0 only. The first line of the file tells you which you have: open it in any text editor, and if it says #VRML V1.0 ascii, use castle-model-viewer, which still reads the old version.
It won’t open, and the text looks like gibberish. Some programs save VRML compressed with gzip (the same idea as a .wrz file). Rename a copy to end in .wrl.gz and open it in Folders: it shows up as an archive with one .wrl inside, which you can tap to open or extract.
Parts are missing. The scene may pull them in from other files with Inline, or use textures that weren’t copied along. Get the whole folder from wherever the model came from, or ask for an export as a single file.
Nothing moves. Animations and clickable parts belong to VRML’s interactivity, which Folders doesn’t run. castle-model-viewer does.
Questions people ask
Can I open a WRL file on Android? Yes. Folders opens VRML 2.0 files in its 3D viewer, with no internet connection needed.
WRL vs X3D: what’s the difference? X3D is VRML’s successor, with XML and other encodings and more features. A .wrl is the older VRML text format. Folders opens VRML; for X3D, use castle-model-viewer.
How do I convert WRL to STL for printing? Folders doesn’t convert models. Import the file into Blender (with the X3D/VRML2 add-on) and export STL, or use the export in your CAD program.
Is a .wrl file safe? It’s text describing shapes. VRML can include scripts, which full VRML players run, but Folders doesn’t run them.
